Traditional methods for drone training, particularly for maintenance and piloting, face significant challenges including high costs, safety risks, logistical constraints, and limited access to physical assets. To address these critical gaps, this research presents the design and implementation of a high-fidelity, interactive simulation platform developed using the Unity3D engine. The platform is designed to facilitate comprehensive drone training through virtual maintenance procedures and realistic flight simulation, thereby enhancing procedural knowledge, operational skill, and safety awareness.

The core motivation stems from the distinct and often more demanding nature of UAV maintenance compared to manned aircraft. Key differentiators include complex system architecture, the absence of cockpit indicators for fault diagnosis, higher potential failure rates, and a shortage of experienced, specialized maintenance personnel. Virtual reality (VR) and simulation technologies offer a transformative solution. By creating an immersive digital twin of a UAV system—using the MQ-9 as a representative model—this platform allows trainees to practice and master procedures in a safe, cost-effective, and repeatable environment. The interactive visualization capabilities enable users to understand both static and dynamic system characteristics, receive real-time geometric interference warnings, and validate the accuracy of their actions, fundamentally improving the efficacy of drone training programs.

Platform Architecture and System Design

The simulation platform is architected using the Model-View-Controller (MVC) design pattern. This logical separation enhances modularity, maintainability, and scalability. The View layer manages all user interface (UI) elements, including 3D scene rendering, 2D control panels, and instructional prompts. The Controller layer contains the core business logic, processing user input, managing simulation state, performing feasibility checks on operations, and handling communication with the data layer.
